Maurycy Gottlieb
Painter (1856–1879), born in Drohobych in Galicia to a Jewish family. A pupil of Jan Matejko in Kraków, later Vienna and Munich. He painted darkly and thickly, close to Rembrandt, and was the first to bring Jewish religious life into major European painting as a subject in its own right rather than as exotica. He died at twenty-three, leaving some two hundred works.Collection10
