    Zino Davidoff, a renowned Ukrainian-Swiss tobacconist and the founder of the Davidoff luxury brand

    The photograph shows him standing in front of his cigar shop in Geneva, Switzerland. Zino Davidoff's father, Henri Davidoff, a tobacco merchant, opened a tobacco shop in Geneva in 1911 after the family fled Ukraine. Zino later took over the business and was instrumental in its growth. He is credited with several innovations in the cigar industry, including the invention of the desktop humidor. During World War II, he famously acquired the cigar stock from Paris to protect it from the invading forces, which cemented his reputation as a key figure in the European tobacco trade. The Davidoff brand, now owned by Oettinger Davidoff AG, has expanded beyond cigars to include a range of luxury products such as fragrances, leather goods, and accessories.

    Bishop-Martyr Nykyta Budka
    Bishop-Martyr Nykyta BudkaA book presentation was held in Rome last week for the launch of a new biography of the first Ukrainian Greek Catholic Bishop of Canada, Blessed Nykyta Budka. Major Archbishop Sviatoslav Shevchuk of Kyiv-Halych was present for the book launch, along with Bishop Borys Gudziak of Paris and Bishop Hlib Lonchyna of London. “God’s Martyr, History’s Witness,” by Father Athanasius McVay, was commissioned by the Ukrainian bishops of Canada for the commemoration of the 100th anniversary of Bishop Budka’s arrival in Canada. Bishop Budka began his ministry in Canada in 1912, just before the beginning of the first World War. After 15 years in Canada, he returned to his native Galicia in what is now Ukraine. During the Soviet occupation of Ukraine following World War II, Bishop Budka was imprisoned and deported to Kazakhstan, where he died a martyr’s death.

    Ivan ZavadskyBorn in 1780 near Hadyach in Poltava Oblast. He was a circumnavigator and polar explorer, cartographer, hydrographer, and collector of natural history collections. During 1819–1821, he served as deputy captain on the warship Vostok (Russian: Шкхид), which made a circumnavigation of the Southern Ocean in search of a route to the South Pole. This expedition was one of the first to discover Antarctica and the islands near it: the South Sandwich Islands, Alexander I, and Peter I. Since the days of Soviet historiography, Ivan Zavadovsky has been called a Russian, as has Lysyansky. Ivan Zavadovsky. Photo from open sources. One volcanic island was named in honor of Zavadovsky. In 2016, the government of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands printed four postage stamps "Zavadovsky Island". Another island in the Western Ice Shelf near Antarctica was also named after him. In Oleksandr Dovzhenko's film story "Antarctica", Ivan Zavadovsky is one of the main characters.
